I was a children’s book illustrator for 20 years. It was lovely but solitary work. The local college offering City & Guilds’ courses offered one of many solutions. I took a course in embroidery and discovered Stump work. The stump work boxes from the early 17th. century captivated me. I wanted that texture and moved away from illustrating into a 3 dimensional fairyland. The next push came from friends’ encouragement & belief in what I was doing. Through them I discovered the idea of inventing a world where characters could have adventures. Working out how to develop my characters took hours of experiment. Yet the whole business of producing a world and peopling it is, despite despairing moments & mega glitches, fun and enjoyable. And that is exactly what I want to give people, fun and a bit of enjoyment.
